Press release
Per Barclay
nytt landskap
1 november – 2 desember 2007
Galleri MGM is pleased to present a series of new works in the exhibition ‘new landscape’ by Per Barclay. The exhibition is the artist’s second solo show in the gallery. The title ‘new landscape’, bears reference to what the artist describes as a new stage in his thirty-year career. He has in recent years experienced a strong determination providing his works with new vitality.
The exhibition includes installation, collages and photographs. Despite the different mediums, the show is linked through a mutual theme. At first glance, the diversity and complexity of Barclays works is striking. However, on closer inspection, the contrast and tension existing between terror and calm, beauty and horror characterizes the entire exhibition. This has been a characteristic feature in most of Barclay’s works.
The central piece in the exhibition is a light and sound installation that covers the entire gallery space. It is a controlled, complicated installation exposing cold beauty and technical complexity as well as an image of organic rhythm and movement. The installation, simultaneously sculptural and architectural, with its steel cables and wires visible, creates a violent suspense. Through a forceful light and intense sound, the installation generates a tension within the spectators.
The exhibition also presents a new series of photographs and photo-collages titled Regine and Max. In the photographs, two young children, a boy and a girl, poses in a cool, northern landscape. On closer inspection, the immediate beauty and delicate nature of the girl, is disturbed by a feeling of uneasiness. The familiar ambiguity of Barclay’s works is presented and the viewer is faced with a challenging feeling of anxiety that does not leave you untouched.
Per Barclay (b.1955 Oslo) lives and works in Paris and Turin. Educated in Oslo, he has lived abroad during most of his career. At present, his works are shown at Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid in an exhibition presenting a selection of photographs from the museums permanent collection. Simultaneously, he is showing at Galeria Oliva Arauna in Madrid. In June 2008, he will open an extensive solo exhibition at the prestigious Fondazione Merz in Turin.
Forthcoming exhibition: norway says, 11.12.07 – 20.01.08
