Galleri MGM is proud to present its second exhibition with electronic artist Sven Påhlsson (born in 1965).
"Bending waters III" continues the artist's thorough examination into computer animation. The installation at Galleri MGM is the result of two years of work. “Bending Waters III” is part of a series consisting of animated fluid simulations. His advanced production technique, using 3D animation and synchronized presentation, is in these works developed further. The idea behind the work was conceived several years ago. However, contemporary technique has recently made its creation possible. Known for incorporating sound in his installations, “Bending Waters III”, is silent.
Through simulating 10 million drops of water, Påhlsson has produced a rhythmic and pulsating structure that continuously alters its forms. The liquid formation expands and retracts. The drops of water are continuously in motion. They never totally dissolve and always return to a stringent wave-like shape. There is no longer a narrative, and the artist describes the work as a digital sculpture.
In “Bending water III”, Påhlsson investigates into the overwhelming forces in nature. Artists throughout art history have often found inspiration in the element of water and the wave motif. In Gustav Courbet’s famous painting “The Wave”, the water strikes against the beach and becomes a symbol of nature’s eternal and ongoing force bringing to mind Påhlsson’s ‘wave’, which moves in an eternal and timeless loop.
As with nature, the complex structure is simultaneously quiet and explosive. For the viewers, the formation takes on a certain subjectivity. Its character has a changing temper, and while contemplating the work, mood of the spectators constantly changes. The work imbeds an overwhelming strength that pulls you in, allowing you to drift of into a meditative state.
Sven Påhlsson lives and works in Oslo. He graduated from The National Academy of Fine Art in 1990 and stayed 7 years in New York before returning to Oslo. His works are acquired by several museum collections, among others the Astrup Fearnley Collection and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Oslo. Internationally, Påhlsson is represented in major American private collections, such as The Rubell and The Peter Norton Collections. His works are shown at The Almine Rech Gallery in Paris and Spencer Brownstone in New York. He is at present part of a group exhibition at F15 in Moss.
